The BSCBAA is a non-profit organization for owners, breeders and friends dedicated to the  continuance and preservation of the flushing spaniel as developed and hunted by Lemuel Whitaker "Whit" Boykin (1861-1932). It is an organization that continues to be run solely by club member volunteers for the welfare of Boykin Spaniels everywhere.  The motto "Dedicated to all the things you do with you Boykin Spaniel" is what the BSCBAA strives to uphold.

The BSCBAA was appointed by the American Kennel Club as the national parent club for the Boykin Spaniel.  The honor of being designated as the AKC national parent club is a responsibility of stewardship of the breed. They are given the task of preserving the breed's standard. They are responsible for educating breeders, judges and the public about the breed's history, function and possible health problems. A national parent club is comprised of dedicated breeders and enthusiasts of the Boykin Spaniel working together for the best interests of the breed and the sport of dogs.

There has always been an active movement for the Boykin Spaniel to be recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC).  Many people were disappointed when the newly formed breed registry ceased it's attempts to become the AKC parent club in the 1980's. Appreciation for the  standardized registration practices and competitive events they offered as well as the medical advances that were being achieved by philanthropic funding by the AKC continued to fuel the desire to become a recognized breed.

After it was clear the the breed registry would not reverse their decision to no longer pursue AKC recognition, the Boykin Spaniel Club of America & Breeders Association was formed with the clear intention written in the by-laws that they were putting the breed's health and welfare as top priorities to focus on. Additionally, the by-laws stated that the club would actively pursue AKC recognition for the Boykin Spaniel breed.

The breed entered the AKC Foundation Stock Service (AKC/FSS) in 1997. The same year the BSCBAA became incorporated in the state of South Carolina.

The BSCBAA was the first Boykin Spaniel organization to take a stand for conscientious breeding focused on reducing the frequency of genetic diseases while protecting the hunting instincts of the breed. They were the first Boykin Spaniel organization to require a Code of Ethics  agreement as part of their membership application process; a code that requires that all members' actions be guided be a simple question of  "Is it in the best interest of the breed?"

A petition to the AKC Board granted Boykin Spaniels the right to compete in Spaniel Hunt Tests and Companion Dog Events (Obedience, Rally, Agility & Tracking) while remaining as an  AKC/FSS breed and continuing to work toward full AKC recognition. On January 1, 2006 the breed was eligible to compete in the Spaniel Hunt Tests and subsequently the first AKC Boykin Spaniel title was earned in February 2006. On July 1, 2006 they became eligible to compete in the  Companion Dog Events and earned titles in those events the same month.

The BSCBAA has continued to grow and develop as a volunteer organization. In January 2007, the AKC Board of Directors voted to name the BSCBAA as the official AKC Boykin Spaniel national parent club http://www.akc.org/pdfs/about/board_minutes/0107.pdf

The Boykin Spaniel met all of the needed criteria to advance into the AKC Miscellaneous Group effective January 1, 2008. In the summer of 2009, AKC announced that the breed would advance to full AKC registration status on December 1, 2009 and be granted the privilege to exhibit in Conformation events and compete for Conformation Championships starting on December 31, 2009.

Members continue to plan for educational workshops and seminars, health clinics and hunting events. Members throughout the country are encouraged to offer suggestions for programs as well as volunteer for chair or committee positions within the club. The future is very bright for the breed and the BSCBAA is proud to be a part of it.
