The AKC Boykin Spaniel Standard The AKC designated one organization for each breed as the national parent club or "Parent Club". The AKC received the proposed standard in late 2005 as written by the then BSCBAA BOD: Pat Watts, Paul Pennell, James Heinz, Gina Plott, Ginger Hurley, Emily Foster, Greg Copeland, Jack Summerville and Kimberly Bushnell. In January 2007, the AKC Board of Directors voted to designate the BSCBAA as the Boykin Spaniel's national parent club. The standard for the Boykin Spaniel was approved by AKC on February 9, 2007 and effective January 1, 2008. A Breed standard is a breeders’ guide, providing a blueprint or complete picture of what the ideal dog of a particular breed should be like in appearance, structure and temperament. AKC requires that each breed has a written standard and provides guidelines for writing and approving the standard at: http://www.akc.org/pdfs/GuidelinesForWritingBreedStandards.pdf As the Boykin Spaniel parent club, the BSCBAA is responsible for maintaining the Boykin Spaniel standard. BSCBAA members may petition for changes or clarifications to the standard. Club members may be appointed by the BSCBAA BOD to serve on a "Breed Standard Committee". After being voted on by the membership these revisions are presented to the AKC's BOD for final approval. Standards may only be presented to AKC once every 5 years.
